Van Dead and Bicycle Stolen

April 14, 2009:
My Van died over a week ago, but I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. Pam and I are trying to pay off some debt so we're holding off on getting it fixed.
But I'm sorry to say that my bicycle was stolen outside my office sometime yesterday afternoon. It was locked up with a 3/4 inch cable lock and neither the bicycle nor lock were to be found when I left work yesterday. I have been riding my bicycle every day the last week and a half (ever since my van died basically), so my guess it that someone anticipated it being there, and quickly cut the lock and loaded it into a truck. Of course this is all pure conjecture.
I've always been a subscriber to the theory that it's not if your bicycle gets stolen, but it's when it gets stolen. I think anyone that has used a bicycle for daily commuting for any extended period of time and has parked it outside can say the same thing. I had a bicycle stolen in college as well, but that was due to my own stupidity because I left it unlocked on the balcony at my apartment. That bicycle was a $75 Wal-Mart bike, but the bike I had stolen yesterday was a collectible 1993 Brookstone XO-5 :( I knew it retailed for $325 new, but I searched for some 90s Brookstone bikes online and found they were actually selling (in better condition than my bike) for $1,000-$2,000, because the frame design is apparently coveted but no longer available in newer bikes.
Having my bicycle stolen really made me realize something. A lot of people have bicycles they never use. Within 3 hours of updating my facebook status I got an offer to borrow (or just plain have) 3 different bicycles that were just sitting in people's garage with flat tires, as well as one bicycle that will not get much use after the MS150 this weekend.
But with every door that closes a window opens (I think I messed that saying up but I'm going to keep going). I'm going to fit my wife's bike to myself and use that until I can afford a new one. I'm also planning on buying a Moped from my friend Austin this weekend, which will really help with the transportation problems. I'm going to have to get a scooter poncho for when it rains (I'm not above them like Drew is).
Everything will work out in the end.
