Carey's Playground

On this day in Carey's life...

<<< Stuck in the middle (random thought) And so starts a new chapter in my life >>>

April 28, 2008:

I thought it would be fun to thumb through my old blog entries, emails, memories and photographs and see where I was on (or near) this day in history.  It's great to see how far I've progressed.

April 28, 2004:  We were finishing up our first full year in Baytown in a decent apartment.  I was working a horrible telecommuting job for a horrible person.  Pam is finishing her first year of Grad School.  I was playing a lot of online Go and just recently finished 3rd in the Houston Go Club tournament.  We were both finding out how hard it is to meet people in Baytown, and pretty lonely overall.  I was near a breaking point at my job and the outlook for the future was grim.

April 28, 2005: Living with my in-laws for a few months now after finances got tight after losing my telecommuting job.  Pam is Student Teaching and looking to teach full-time in the fall.  I was finishing up a Spanish class for fun.  I spent most of my days doing what limited contract work I could get, and when I didn't have any work, I would drink, download and watch old movies.  It was pretty much my low point before "the wake-up call" in my brain.

April 28, 2006:
Still living with my in-laws.  After a very busy year of studies and near-minimum wage work, I was ready to start my new job with the county in 3 short days.  I decided to take up birdwatching and got a bird guide from the library and identified a couple birds in my backyard.  We were getting ready for a camping trip with my parents where I could really put my new hobby to use.  I was very excited to start my new job, and was hoping that this would be the job to stick.

April 28, 2007: We were living in an amazing apartment near the Galleria.  I was still working for the county and just finished a vacation to Las Vegas where I saw a bunch of life birds and had a ton of fun all around.  I had decided to wait a year to apply for law school after a lackluster LSAT grade.  I was managing a birding meetup.com group and we were meeting some great friends through a meetup.com couples' group.  We were getting very close to setting a closing date for the house that we now own.  We thought that getting the money we needed for the house would be easy, and that all the repairs would be done by Thanksgiving.

Today:  Still working for the county, trying to balance a social life, law school, and home repair.  Home repairs are still not done.  I'm very excited about law school and yet worried that my social life that I've worked so hard to obtain will take a nose dive once I'm faced with the workload of school as well as my 9-5 job.

This may be the time that you find out who your social friends are vs. your real friends. The real friends will still be there. If you lived in NYC, your friends leave town every two-three years, so know you are not alone.

Great to hear about your acceptance to law school! Hooray!

I think my real friends are going to end up being the ones that are already in or planning to go to law school :)
