Time keeps on slipping... slipping...

April 1, 2008:
The past few days, I've been doing a lot of thinking. Things are getting out of hand at home, and it's finally starting to get to me. I'm tired of being so busy, all the time. It's draining to have so many work, home, health, and social obligations, as well as half a dozen hobbies, most of which I never get to do as often as I'd like. I've decided to prioritize my life.
First priority should always be health, in anyone's priority list. I have been seriously neglecting this, putting it at the very bottom of the list. I've been not running, eating poorly, and drinking a lot of alcohol. When you exercise you feel better, and when you lose fat, you have a better self-image and self-esteem. If I can manage my health better, I can manage my life more efficiently. From now on, diet and exercise will be my first priority. If I have to choose between exercise and anything else, I should choose exercise.
Second priority will be normal household chores. My house is so backed up with normal household chores right now that it's hard to get anything done or find what I'm looking for. We have dandelions growing three feet high in our front yard and we seem to be a constant target for random vandalism, because our houses basically look abandoned. I should make sure that all normal chores are done before I sit down to relax in the evening. When all the chores are finished, I feel more relaxed. I need to tell myself that next time I start talking myself into procrastination.
Third priority is going to be organization. We have an entire room that's packed chest-high with boxes that need to be sorted through, and that's not even including all the boxes in remote storage! While it seems unlikely that I would get around to this priority point every night, I need to make an effort to try to work on organization a few times a week. Home repairs/improvements also fall under this category. Every week I tell myself I'm going to do a little painting in our house during the week, and every week nothing gets done until the weekend. I have no reason not to. Most nights I just plop in front of the computer or TV for 3-4 hours. It's no wonder I'm stressed out, nothing is getting done!
The last priority is the "fun" category, which includes (but is not limited to): socializing, hobbies, and individual downtime, such as watching TV or playing on the computer. These are basically all the things that would prevent me from achieving anything higher up on the priority scale. I have been doing way too much of this, much more than I need to relax. Don't get me wrong, this is still a necessary category. All work and no play makes Carey a dull boy. But I've been convincing myself that I need more time for this than I actually do, then I get stressed out when other things don't get done.
So today is the start of the new Carey. Becoming more healthy will make me feel better about myself. Getting normal chores done will make me less stressed out and allow me to live in an environment with less clutter. Organization is a long-term goal, in that the more I commit to it, the less work it will be in the future. Then, last but not least, if I can commit to the first three priorities, it will just happen in the end that I will have more time for fun, and feel better about myself and less stressed out while I do it.
