Running Pains

<<< Texas Independence Day 5k Run Law School >>>

February 29, 2008:

My knee is doing enormously better.  It's finally gotten to the point where it doesn't hurt at all.  Unfortunately my other knee is starting to hurt after a little bit of running, but my sports doctor seems to think it's just me getting back into the swing of things.  Since it hurt after 1 mile on Tuesday, but after 2 miles today, I would have to say he's right.  The physical therapists also have been really stressing icing my knees multiple times a day, which I have been neglecting to do.

In any case, it feels good to finally get back into the swing of things.  I really do feel great after a run, now that the pain has stopped.  It makes me enjoy running again, which I haven't for a few months now.

Carey is not happy.

Tomorrow will be my first real test of my knee.  Pam and I are running the Texas Independence Day 5k Run.  Good little Texans will correct me about the date, and tell me that Texas Independence Day is actually March 2, when the Texas Declaration of Independence (from Mexico) was signed.  But it's harder to get people out to run on a Sunday morning :)  It's going to be a real fun route, starting at 18th and Congress in Austin, then running down Congress, through the state capitol grounds, to 2nd street and back.

The 'easy' 3-miler we did this morning clocked in at 39 minutes.  The impressive part was that I was able to do the entire thing without having to walk for any reason (only slight pain, no shortness of breath).  My record for a 5k was set last month at 35:59.9, when my knee was so bad that I had to run/walk the entire last mile (see figure 1).

So my 2 goals for tomorrow is to beat that time, and to walk away from it without any lingering pain.
