Foot Injuries

<<< First Run Out OK The 10 mile-milestone >>>

November 15, 2007:

I wanted to wait until I had a diagnosis to say anything, but:

A couple of days after my first 10-mile run, the top of my foot started hurting.  It tried running a 20-minute run on it Monday and it got worse.  It was still hurting on Wednesday so I went to see the podiatrist.

He took X-rays and felt around, and said the symptoms I was describing sounded like a torn tendon, but the circumstances leading towards a torn tendon would of been dropping something on my foot, which wasn't the case.  But he told me to stay off it and he scheduled me for an MRI that Friday and told me absolutely no exercise, because if it is the tendon, it could snap like a rubber band with over-use.

The MRI was boring.  I had to stare at the ceiling for 30 minutes while listening to the radio.  The doctor told me the results usually took 2 business days and I could expect the results on Tuesday.  I called my podiatrist on Tuesday and got the Woodlands (way up north) office.  She said the downtown office was closed for the day, so they were redirecting the calls, which seemed odd to me.  Wednesday I called again and go the same office.  She said this time that the reason there was no one there is because someone was taking time off to take care of their sick daughter.  After that I was just plain angry.  Everything put me in a bad mood (mostly because I didn't have the stress release of exercise).

Finally today, I got to the podiatrist and went over my MRI results.  He said it was an inflammation; a ganglion cyst.  This is basically a sac of jelly-like fluid trapped beneath my skin.  He said it wasn't serious and that I could exercise again, but I would have to start out slow and increase my distance very slowly, at most a mile a week.  This is unfortunate because the Half-Marathon is only 8 weeks away.  But, I'll do what he says, and hope that the cyst doesn't bother me.  If all goes well, I should at least be able to walk/run the 13.1 miles to the finish line.  Pam will be happy that she won't be running alone like she has been.

Another good thing is that he says it's the pounding of the foot on the pavement that causes the irritation, so I'm free and clear to ride my bicycle again.  All I need to do is fix the flat tire!
