Bus Options and Getting the Bikes Fixed Up

At long last, my parent's bicycles will once again become usable! After years of sitting in their garage and my back porch, I took them in to get them all fixed up.
Ever since we moved into the house, I have been disappointed with my METRO options with regards to length of trip and amount of walking. Before I took a bus straight from the front of my apartment complex to the front of my office building downtown. Now, I either have to: 1) walk a long block, take a bus all the way to the wrong side of downtown, then take another bus tot he right side of downtown or 2) walk 6 short blocks in my neighborhood to a bus that goes a lot closer to my building (5 downtown blocks away). See this map of my neighborhood to see the difference between short and long blocks... it's about 1:2. Either way, even if I hit the buses exactly right, it takes about as long as a normal ride at my old place. If I just miss the bus and have to wait at the train tracks, it can take a whole hour of waiting and riding.

The upside to these buses are that they run past midnight. My old bus didn't run past 7pm. So now I can actually take public transportation somewhere after work and still get home. An added bonus, the second bus described above goes straight to Hobby airport. It takes about an hour compared to 25 minutes of driving, but that's still worth it, compared to airport parking or pestering friends for a ride.
But back to my original point. Right now we live about 4 miles from where I work, with a bike lane the entire way into downtown. So now I'm going to try to start riding my bike the entire way. And now that METRO has bike racks on every one of their buses, if it's too rainy or hot (in Houston? nahh...), I can still take the bus. The bikes should be repaired by Wednesday. I can't wait!
