Moving in Houston in the Summer sucks

<<< Into the new house Problems with the City of Houston water people >>>

August 20, 2007:

I took a comp day on Friday to help get the house ready for move in.  Here is basically how my three-day weekend went:

Friday

  • Loaded up a van-full and took it all over to storage
  • Priced lawn mowers and bought an air conditioner, dropped the air conditioner off at the house
  • Assembled a set of shelves
  • Did grocery shopping
  • Did 8 loads of laundry
Saturday
  • Ran 3 miles for my half-marathon training
  • Moved all of our furniture that's going into storage, including: A large TV, TV stand, couch, love seat, mattress and box spring, three tables, a computer desk, a bookshelf, 2 bicycles, and some really heavy steel decorative lawn furniture.
  • Also moved a wooden futon frame and a stationary desk over to the house.
  • Bought a lawn mower
Sunday
  • Assembled the lawn mower
  • Started to mow the lawn just to have the lawn mower break
  • Bought replacement parts for the lawn mower and finished mowing the lawn that hadn't been mowed in 3 months
  • Mounted the air conditioner into the wall
  • Figured out how to light the hot water heater
  • Cleaned the bathroom since there was dried urine on the walls
  • Bought privacy shades and other various tools
  • Found out the fridge didn't work so we moved the one from the other house over to the house we'll be living in.
Then, last night, we found out the air mattress we were temporarily sleeping on had a leak, so we essentially slept on the floor.  Then today we ran another 20 minutes for the half-marathon training.

Today we're going to try to finish up everything else that needs to get done in the house, which includes:
  • Pulling all the carpenter's nails out from the bedroom floor
  • Defrosting and cleaning out the fridge and reattaching the handles
  • Cleaning everything
  • Moving the futon back to the apartment, since the air mattress is broken
  • Small grocery shopping run
  • Finish the rest of the laundry
Needless to say, I'm rather sore.  I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but it's probably just as well.
