Oregon (Washington) Trip: Day 5

June 15, 2007:
Yesterday we drove to Washington. What normally took 3 1/2 hours took a whole day because we went to the coast. We took Hwy 26, which went through the state forests of Oregon. It also went through three counties I had never been to before: Columbia, Tillamook and Clatsop. Clatsop was where we spent most of our time since it was the highway that went up the coastline.
Our first real stop was in Seaside, which wasn't all that exiciting. We drove to the coast and saw the Pacific while we were there, but we didn't stop. The whole city looked like it was one big carinval, which we really weren't in the mood for.
The next stop 20 miles up the road is where we stopped for lunch: Astoria. This town was much more interesting. The old shopping/antique area looked like it was in the process of being renovated. I think the entire town is going to be a major tourist destination in 10 years or so. We ate at a restaurant called the Urban Cafe, which was the best cafe/diner we had been to so far (and we had been to a lot this week). If anyone just happens to be in Astoria, we would highly recommend it. After lunch we went to a thrift/surplus store called "Deals Only" where we must of spent an hour. The place was huge! I bought a bunch of candy and Pam bought a bunch of clothes :)
After Astroia, we crossed the looong bridge into Washington. After crossing, we took a quick u-turn detour to pick up Wahkiakum county, which is a county I've been to with my parents when I was young, but had never been to of my own doing. It would of left a big white spot on my post-driver's license map if I had missed it. Because of Dan's Law of Conservation of Counties, I couldn't let that happen!
Western Washington was pretty boring. We got the feeling that it was kind of an economically depressed area, which my Uncle Roy confirmed after we got to Gig Harbor. Other than a rest area east of Aberdeen, we didn't really make any more stops. We did, however, take a detour so that I could grab Mason county, a county I've never been to, even with my parents.
In Gig Harbor we went to a local pub/restaurant and did all the normal chatty catching up stuff with my aunt and uncle. Then we took a walk around the Bay and discussed what a tourist town Gig Harbor was.
Tomorrow we're going to be going to taking the Bremerton-Seattle Ferry into Seattle to see the fish market and the space needle. We'll also be picking up Kitsap county, which is the last new county of the trip... *sniff*.
