Birding on Ice, Part 2

We decided to stay today, and I'm glad we did. We got really lucky with the rain... It seemed to let up everytime we stopped. Today we went to Lake Tawokoni, 1 1/2 hours east of Dallas. We spotted some great birds, like a hugh flock of Smith's Longspurs (winter visitors from Manitoba), Sprauge's Pipits, Rusty Blckbirds, and a Rock Wren (a mostly western bird).
After the lake, they cut the trip short. We met with a couple willing to go look for the Texas review species Little Gull in Dallas with us. It was hidden in a flock of 150 Bontaparte's Gulls, but its black under-wings really made it stand out! We went around the lake and saw the rooting Monk Parakeets and found a couple of Spoted Towees in the process.
We drove back to Lewisville, passing trees with 1/4" of ice
on them, to search for the Snow Bunting again. After 1 1/2 hours of searching, we came up with nada.
We went back to the banquet where I reminiced with others about the weekend and ate good food. In the raffle, I won a CD of south Texas bird calls, a pair of hummingbird earrings for Pam, and a gift certificate to Denny's. I also bought at the silent auction a High Island patch and cap for $16. And everyone got a handmade bluebird house.
Tomorrow all the field trips are cancelled, so we're going to try to find the review species Costa's Hummingbird west of Fort Worth and then head home early. There is also a Rufous Hummingbird (rare for the area), but they winter on the coast, so I'm not worried about catching that one later.
