January 12, 2007:

Becky (from my birding group) and I are here at the Crowne Royal conference room.  Today we switched and went on the Hagerman WMA field trip and we did quite good!  I saw a total of 17 (!!!) new lifebirds, including the very rare, Texas review species Northern Shrike and White-Winged Scoter.  The weather was nice, until the cold front came though.  I had never seen anything like it...  It dropped 20 degrees in 20 minues (61 to 41), then we went south and outran it and it got back up to 68 in a matter of seconds (fogging our windows immediately!). It was like an invisible wall of cold air!  It hit so fast the first time it felt like we stepped into a walk-in refrigerator!  We hunted for the popular Snow Bunting (another review species) in Lewisville on the way back, but did not find it... But we did see a Common Merganser, usually only seen (if at all) in the panhandle.  Right now they are telling us that there is forecasted freezing rain tomorrow all day, and that we all need to meet at 7am, regardless of what time we were supposed to leave, to determine which field trips were still an option.  It is supposed to be a high of 32 (windchill 25) and a low of 31.  I'll give everyone an update later when I know more.
