Birding at Brazos Bend; Bird #200!

Brazos Bend State Park yesterday was a blast!  I saw 10 new birds for my life list, crossing the 200 mark!  The park itself was very well maintained, with nice paths and a freshly paved road. 

There were Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks everywhere!  I had never seen so many.  Just before the watch tower, we spotted a brilliant red male Vermillion Flytcatcher, one of my favorite birds.  Bird number 200 was just after the watch tower, the Eastern Bluebird.  As soon as I saw the bluebirds, someone yelled "Bald Eagle!"  Everyone whipped around to see it flying our way.  It ended up perching about 300 yards away and I got a decent picture of it (decent enough to tell it's a bald eagle).  It was quite an exciting day!

After walking down the path to the watch tower, we walked back and went over to another pond where Least Grebes have been spotted.  We didn't see any Least Grebes, but we saw over a hundred Black Vultures!  I wasn't too disappointed, since I've already seen a Least Grebe.

Lastly we stopped by the feeders, where I got a close-up look up American Goldfinches, Carolina Chickadees, and a very late Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

Total list of new birds for me were: Ring-necked Duck, Bald Eagle, Wilson's Snipe, Eastern Bluebird, American Pipit, Cedar Waxwing, Orange-crowned Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Swamp Sparrow, and American Goldfinch.
