Weekend in Austin

<<< New Addition to Website: Joe's Goals First Houston Birders Meeting >>>

October 16, 2006:

This last weekend, Pam and I went to Austin to visit my family, and to take advantage of my brother's Fry's Electronics discount.

The drive down was uneventful. We made one stop for dinner at Hartz Chicken, and that was about it. The sunset had no pretty colors. We got to Austin and chat with my parents for a couple hours before going to bed.

The next day, Pam, my parents and I all went garage saling. Pam and I got 6 CDs for $5, but the biggest find was a metal outside table set for $60. It's too bad we only had the car on the way there, we're going to have to wait until Thanksgiving for my parents to bring it down to Houston.

After Garage Saling, Pam, Dad and I went to Fry's for a massive shop-a-thon. The biggest purchase was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 digital camera. It has 10 Megapixels, 12x optical zoom, among other things. We also got a 2GB memory card, camera carrying case, and and photo scanner/printer with photo paper to go with it.

We didn't want Kyle's discount to go to waste, so we kept going. We also got a Portable DVD player with 2 noise-reducing headphones, a 400GB hard drive with external drive enclosure, and a waffle iron. The latter was Pam's idea.

That evening we celebrated my Mom's birthday 2 weeks early (It's officialy on Nov 1st), since we weren't going to see her again until Thanksgiving. We had steaks and brie potatoes, and finished up with pie for dessert. After dinner, we played an extremely fast game of Monopoly where dad crushed us all. It was my fault, I traded him Park Place way too early in the game (He got Boardwalk on his first roll).

The next morning, Mom and I went birding at Wild Basin Preserve, mostly to give my new camera a test drive. Unfortunately, it was too foggy for the birds to be very active. I saw some wrens (probably Carolina Wrens) tucked away in the bushes, but didn't see anything else. We did, however, see a couple of deer that I got a decent photo of.

On our way back, we stopped at Brick Oven Pizza for lunch, in Austin. Then we spent the next 3 1/2 hours driving straight through the rain back to Houston.
