First Houston Birders Meeting

<<< Weekend in Austin Time to Start Dieting Again >>>

September 22, 2006:

On September 16, we had our very first meetup meeting at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center in Memorial Park, bordered by I-610, Woodway Drive, the railroad tracks, and Buffalo Bayou. Carey, Pam, Becky and Kathryn all made appearances. The Houston Arboretum was a great place for birding, with 5 miles of nature trails, including many different habitats, including meadow, forest, pond, and wetland. The Nature Center is open after 8am and has lots of hands-on educational stations.

Our birding path started at the Nature Center, straight East to the outer loop and the meadow, around the meadow to the pond, then back to the Nature Center again.

The parking lot was full of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds! You can see them zipping back and forth between the flowers.

While at the meadow, we saw Blue Jays, a Downy Woodpecker, American Crow, Carolina Chickadee, and a Yellow-throated Vireo.

One of the unexpected high points is when the all the red-headed sliders (turtles) heard us coming and all started migrating over to the observation deck we were standing at. We think that maybe they get fed nutritional supplements by the staff. When we got back to the Nature Center, we saw some Tufted Titmice, Mourning Doves, and Pam spotted a couple of Great-crested Flycatchers. We had also heard a Pilated Woodpecker, Northern Cardinals and Carolina Wrens while we were there. Overall it was a great meeting! We talked about checking out Birding Loop by Loop at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary and our upcoming field trip to High Island for the fall migrations.
