Armand Bayou Bird Count

This morning I went to my first bird count by the Houston Audubon Society. They felt the Bay area was under-represented, so they joined forces with the Armand Bayou Nature Center and started a monthly bird count, starting with this month.
I was worried that I would get in the way, since I'm still just starting out. Luckily, the people there were very friendly! We split into four groups and each group got a different section of the Bayou. I was in the group that went down the trail in the wooded area to the Bayou. It proved difficult to actually see birds through all the trees, but my group-mates were able to tell what a lot of birds were just by their calls.
The birds that I physically saw myself (that I hadn't identified before) were: Green Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, and Orchard Oriole.
The birds that I haven't seen before, but I heard and was told what they were (and therefore I can't put on my life list), were: Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse, Red-eyed Vireo, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and Downy Woodpecker. I'm going to have to go back and see if I can see them! I'm told the hardest of these to see is the Red-eyed Vireo, which likes to hide at the tops of trees.
