OwlCon: Day 1

Finished up the first night of OwlCon. As usual, the only free parking was a 10 minute walk away. We got there and signed up for all the games we wanted to play this weekend.
Tonight we played a game we had both played before: Iron Dragon. It's a rail game that takes 4-5 hours. You get to draw on a big map of a middle-earth type with crayons, building your rail. The goal is to connect 7 of the 8 major cities and have 250 cash on hand. You build rails spending money, which you get from trasporting goods on your train from town to town. You would get a card that says they'll pay this much if you deliver this commodity to this town. Then all you have to do is pick up that commodity from one town and take it to another. Then you also have foremen, which can reduce the cost to build rails. For example, it's normally 2 gold to build through forests, but if you have the elf foreman, it only costs one. We had 4 players, which I had never gotten a chance to play with before (I had only done 3), and after 4 1/2 hours, Conan finally won. I had screwed up early in the game (I misread a card), so it was hard for me to come back.
Tomorrow we're signed up for Munchkin (card game with a role playing twist), Diplomacy (war board game where diplomacy/talking is everything), and Giant Settlers of Catan (building/trading game). I'll have another blog entry tomorrow with the recap of the day.
