Dropping hobbies like bad habits

Stuck in the middle (random thought) >>>

May 7, 2008:

Well, it's finally hit me.  I need to downsize my hobbies.  I had a hard enough time keeping up with them without law school, but now that I'm going to be on constant study watch, I need to downsize.  Here are the hobbies that I'm going to give up while class is in session.

For the most part, this decision was easy.  Since I've been gradually more and more busy leading up to law school, I've been naturally doing less of the the fun stuff, and I find out which hobbies are really worth it.

First of all, the keepers:

  • Doing my weekly trip to the Flying Saucer for pint night on Mondays is in.  It's a great stress & social release and I can still hit it up on the way home from class, since it's pretty close to my bus transfer point.  I'll just have to become part of the late crowd rather than the early crowd.

  • Go club on Sunday mornings is still in.  Since it's on the weekend in the morning, it's a very convenient time.  Even with how busy I've been, I've always managed to make an effort to go (no pun intended).

  • Video Games.  I've always managed to squeeze time for video games, no matter what stage of life I'm in.  Besides, I just got 4 new games through Goozex.

  • Running.  I have to exercise.  Even though I haven't been doing this lately, I think in the long run it's in my best interest to keep this one.  This is going to be the hardest one to keep, but if it really should be the most important one to fit in.

  • Postcard Collecting.  This really doesn't take much time at all, so there isn't much reason to drop it.
Other than those two, I don't see that I'll have much time for anything else.  Here are a list of hobbies that I will not have time for:
  • Board Gaming.  This is one of those things that I love to do, but it's become less and less of a priority.  Of course board gaming with friends on the weekend is still in, but I won't be going to any "groups."  I still plan on going to the Memorial Day weekend of board gaming at San Jac before I give it up, however.

  • Birdwatching.  I was surprised by this one, but I just haven't been going out and doing it recently, so I might as well just release it as a hobby so I don't have to struggle with myself over not going out and doing it.

  • Road Trips / County Counting.  As much as I love this, if I can just kill it in my head now, I won't kill myself daydreaming about it later.  Besides, gas is astronomically expensive right now, so this is probably for the best.  I'll still take opportunities as they arise, but for the most part, I'm putting this one on hold.
So that's it.  No more daydreaming about the above three hobbies because I'm giving them up for now.

You don't have to give them up forever. Changes in your life necessitate that you allow certain activities to go dormant, but they might pop up at a later date and still give you the same excitement and satisfaction as they did before.
